Hey there, explorer! Ready to share another thrilling adventure with you. This time, we're heading to the enchanting Balkan country of Montenegro, specifically the picturesque town of Kotor.
I had no idea what to expect, but the stories of stunning hiking trails were too tempting to resist.
In this blog, I’m going to share with you my personal experience hiking one of the “easier” and beginner-friendly hikes in Kotor, plus other hikes you might be interested in when visiting Montenegro!
To start off, Kotor is a hiker's paradise: with trails that cater to every level. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a novice, there's a trail that's just right for you.
I decided to start with the Fortress hike, a trail that promised breathtaking views without too much strain. They say these trails offer the best views in the country, and I was eager to see if the rumors were true.
Frankly, I did not get to hike the Ladder of Kotor myself, but I managed to get a glimpse of it from my drone! I chose to hike up to the fortress instead - until I was stopped by the thunderstorms that occurred during my hike!).
However, the journey was nothing short of spectacular. As I ascended the trails, I was treated to panoramic views of the stunning landscape. The higher I climbed, the more breathtaking the scenery became. It was a challenging uphill hike, but the reward was well worth the effort.
But don't just take my word for it! I've captured the highlights of my journey in a travel vlog. From the first step to the last, you can join me on this unforgettable adventure. So grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and let's explore the beauty of Kotor together. Click on the video link below, and let's get this adventure started!
What Makes Kotor, Montenegro a Great Hiking Destination?
Kotor, Montenegro, is a hiker's dream destination, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and cultural heritage. Nestled between the gray mountains and the Adriatic Sea, Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its well-preserved medieval fortifications and stunning architecture.
The city's location at the foot of Mt. Lovćen provides a dramatic backdrop for hiking adventures. The trails wind their way up the mountain, offering panoramic views of the city, the sea, and the surrounding landscapes. The contrast between the rugged mountain terrain and the tranquil sea creates a unique hiking experience that is both challenging and rewarding.
One of the highlights of hiking in Kotor is the opportunity to explore the city's historic fortifications. The trails lead you along the city's high and wide ramparts, up to the old fortress that overlooks the town. These fortifications, which seem to grow like rock tendrils along the hill, offer a glimpse into the city's past and provide stunning views of the present-day city.
But Kotor is not just about natural beauty and historic sites. The city itself is a vibrant mix of old and new, where modern cafes coexist with medieval churches and Venetian palaces. The narrow cobblestone alleys echo with the sounds of serenades and live music, and the balconies adorned with petunias are the favorite resting spots of the city's cats.
In Kotor, hiking is more than just a physical activity. It's an immersive experience that allows you to connect with the city's rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a novice, Kotor offers a hiking experience that you won't soon forget.
FAQ’s
Is There a Vlog About Hiking in Kotor?
Yes! You can watch my vlog on the Travelling Foxes YouTube channel!
When is the Best Time to Hike in Kotor?
The best time to hike in Kotor is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the trails are less crowded. The summer months can be hot, so if you're hiking then, it's best to start early in the morning to beat the heat.
PRO TIP: Always check the weather forecast before setting off on your hike. On my hiking day, there was a crazy thunderstorm and I was trapped without waterproof clothes or an umbrella in the town (my own fault, but in my defense, I was visiting Kotor for a wedding and not hiking trails!)
What are the Top Hiking Trails in Kotor?
Kotor boasts several incredible hiking trails. The Ladder of Kotor, Vrmac Ridge Trail, Pestingrad Peak, and the Kotor Fortress and City Walls hike are among the most popular. Each trail offers unique views and challenges, catering to hikers of all levels. I’ve not done all of them yet as of this writing, but that could be for next time!
What Should You Know About the Ladder of Kotor Hike?
The Ladder of Kotor is a historic trail that was once the only path connecting Kotor and Cetinje. The trail is known for its numerous switchbacks and offers stunning views over the Bay of Kotor. It's a strenuous hike, with a total ascent of 940 meters, so be prepared for a challenge. The trail is rocky and uneven in places, so good hiking shoes are a must.
Why Should You Consider the Kotor Fortress and City Walls Hike?
The Kotor Fortress stands on San Giovanni Hill at 260 meters above sea level, overlooking the Old Town of Kotor and the Bay of Kotor. It takes about 45 minutes to hike up the 1350 steps to St. John’s Fort. The hike is steep but the panoramic views from the top are well worth the effort. It's a must-do for any visitor to Kotor for several reasons.
First, it offers a unique blend of history and nature. As you ascend the 1350 steps to St. John’s Fort, you're not only challenging yourself physically but also walking through centuries of history. The fortress itself is a testament to the strategic importance of Kotor in the past, and the walls that snake up the hillside are a remarkable feat of medieval engineering.
Second, the views from the top are simply breathtaking. Overlooking the Old Town of Kotor and the Bay of Kotor, the panorama is a stunning reward for the steep climb. The contrast between the red roofs of the old town, the azure waters of the bay, and the rugged grey mountains is a sight that will stay with you long after your visit.
Third, the hike provides an opportunity to escape the crowds and experience Kotor from a different perspective. While the Old Town can be bustling with tourists, the trail up to the fortress is often less crowded, especially if you start your hike early in the morning.
Lastly, the Kotor Fortress and City Walls hike is accessible to most people. While the climb can be challenging, it's not overly strenuous, and you can take it at your own pace. Plus, there's no need for any special equipment or guided tours - you can do it independently, making it a cost-effective way to experience one of Kotor's top attractions.
What Safety Tips Should You Follow When Hiking in Kotor?
When hiking in Kotor, or anywhere else for that matter, it's important to keep a few safety tips in mind:
Stay on Marked Trails: Always stick to the marked trails. This not only protects the local flora and fauna but also ensures that you don't get lost or end up in a potentially dangerous area.
Check the Weather: Weather conditions can change rapidly, especially in mountainous areas. Always check the weather forecast before you set off on your hike and be prepared for all eventualities. (I forgot to do this!)
Carry Enough Water: Hiking can be strenuous, and it's important to stay hydrated. Make sure you carry enough water, especially during the summer months when temperatures can get quite high.
Wear Appropriate Clothing and Footwear: Wear comfortable clothing suitable for weather conditions. Good hiking shoes are a must, as the trails can be rocky and uneven.
Let Someone Know Your Plans: Always let someone know where you're going and when you expect to be back. This is especially important if you're hiking alone.
Respect the Environment: Remember that you're a guest in nature. Don't litter, don't disturb the wildlife, and respect the rules and regulations of the area.
Be Prepared for Emergencies: Carry a basic first aid kit and know what to do in case of an emergency. This includes knowing the local emergency numbers and being able to give your location.
What Wildlife Might You Encounter on Kotor's Hiking Trails?
Kotor's hiking trails are home to a variety of wildlife. You might spot birds of prey soaring above, lizards basking in the sun, and a variety of insects and butterflies. Always remember to observe wildlife from a distance and never feed or disturb animals.
Be careful - you might spot some snakes! Yikes!
Where Should You Stay When Hiking in Kotor?
During my visit, I stayed at the Forza Terra, a luxury boutique hotel about a 10-minute drive from Kotor. The hotel offers very comfortable rooms and stunning views of the Bay of Kotor. It's an ideal base for exploring not only Kotor's hiking trails but a perfect place to relax after a day of hiking (in the in-house spa!).
Can you Drone in Montenegro?
Yes. Based on my research in 2023 - in Montenegro, you're legally allowed to fly drones as long as you comply with the rules and regulations set by the Montenegro Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). So, before you pack your drone and head off on your adventure, make sure you're well-versed with these rules.
One of the key things to remember is that if your drone weighs more than 500g and you plan to fly it further than 15 meters and higher than 10 meters, you'll need to register your drone with the CAA. The registration process is straightforward and can be done online.
Now, here's where it gets a bit tricky. If you're planning to bring your drone into the country, you'll need to apply for a permit from the Ministry of Economy. This process can take up to a month, so make sure you plan your trip accordingly. And don't forget to carry your permit with you when you travel, as you might need to show it at the airport.
Flying a drone in Montenegro is an incredible experience, but it's important to respect the rules and regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable flight. We used the DJI Mini 3 Pro which is below 250 grams and the best for international travel purposes as you can often use this drone without permits!
